Topical Conditioning of Canine and Feline Skin and Coat

Science of and Care for Skin and Coat

Overview

Since the first step to successfully styling a dog’s coat is dependent upon the condition of its skin and hair, it should be clear that the most basic yet most important role of the professional Pet Stylist is the topical and cosmetic management of canine/feline skin and coat. Yet with such a wide variety of products on the market (coat tar, aloe, humectants, teatree oil, etc.) the pet care specialist must comprehend skin and hair and its reproductive processes to evaluate what specific shampoos, conditioners, oils, and medicinal products contribute to the maintenance or the restoration of healthy coat. This course covers the fundamental reproductive processes of canine skin and hair, then applies those principles to topical preparation of canine coat for optimum health and styling.
